Simply use "\[" instead of a plain "["

you can also just make the botnick with none [] and first get it online and use a botnick.tcl to change the nickname when it's on the irc server. more simple

But that requires user intervention once the bot is online.
If running the bot via a crontab, the bot will be using the wrong nick, until you get online to fix it.
