Actually it's trivially easy to change ... when you type a command into your shell (bash, csh, tcsh, etc), it looks for the program in each directory listed in the PATH environment variable. The reason you have to run a lot of programs with "./" prefixed is because you are telling the shell that the program is in the current directory (which isn't normally in the PATH in most *nix setups). "./" means "the current working directory", just like "../" means "the parent directory of the current working directory".
