By hiding are you refferring to as spoofing? You can spoof through virtual hosts -- vhosts as they call it. OR if you have HostServ or similar IRC services on your network you can change your host to a non-resolvable one or if you are an IRC operator you can get an opermask too.
/whois shows the ident@host of a person in the first raw, it is raw 311 if I am correct. As I said you need spoof through a bouncer or the ways I mentioned above so that your machines IP address is not revealed.

What irc network do you use? and you can get a vhost by buying a BNC from maybe www.eushells.com or www.e-studio.dk/bnc or even join my home channel #shove on Quakenet if you use quakenet and request a bnc from me, Tosser^^ ;p
Also, if you use Quakenet, use this to auth with Q: /msg Q@CServe.quakenet.org AUTH Authname Password
Then type: //mode $me +x
That will auth you with Q and the mode +x will hide change your host to: ident@authname.users.quakenet.org
Or join #shove @ Quakenet and request a bnc from me, Tosser^^
