I'm sure I saw a post on this some where but for the life of me I can't find it now. Is there a command to allow you to temporarily change your bots nick via telnet/dcc?

Yes, via .dump nick somenick but you will need some owner access to it.
Once the game is over, the king and the pawn go back in the same box.

well that didn't work. In dcc chat (I am the owner) I typed .dump nick newnick and it did nothing. The bots nickname is still the same.

Have you replaced newnick with something different and the nick you want it to change to isn't used by someone else?
PS: actualy I see that you need global master access to use it..

maybe there is a channel mode in one of the bot's channels which prevents the bot from changing nicks (and the bot is not oped in)
