I doubt it's a problem with Debian Linux.
I compiled an 1.6.8 a few days ago on Woody without any problems.

hmmz, i think it has 2 do with tcl, but hmmz, it seems to run fine...
Damn.. What should i do, i really need a eggie on this one!
