shell account needed for eggdrop newbie

Post by bubazoo »

Hey guys,

I have read most of the posts here, this is my first post here, and I realize this question has been asked a hundred and one times, LOL, so I will try to be as clear as I can.

I already own 3 domains, to different web hosting providers, but none of them will accept eggdrop or any other type of bot on their servers.

so since I already own 3 domains,

is there a good eggdrop host I can get that will cost me about $2-3 a month? I can't really afford a $10-20 host, and I've tried the free ones but there requirements are so complicated, I can't seem to get an account anywhere.

I am a newbie at this bot stuff, so I really don't know what I need.

I don't need a shell that will let me run a bot 24/7 lets put it that way,
I'll probably be using it once or twice a week maybe.
I'd like to set one up to say funny things to my wife for entertainment, thats really all I am looking for in a bot, so 1 gig of bandwidth is fine,
and about, what, 20 mb of disk space? thats about all I need really.

I was thinking about acmeshells.com, has anyone here had any experience with them, are they pretty reliable?

well let me put it this way, to run an eggdrop bot like this, since I've never done this before, do I need just a Static IP address from a provider? or do I need an actual sub-domain? since I'm not fimilar with eggdrop at the momment, I'm not sure exactally what I need to run this thing.

any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

as for a provider,

$2-3 a month
1-2 background processes (maybe not sure)
20 mb disk space
1 gig bandwidth
accepts paypal

any suggestions? I'd rather pay $1-2 a month then to mess with all the other crap of posting in message boards or whatever they ask you to do, esp since I won't even use it that often. I just don't understand if I need a static IP or a sub-domain or what exactally. thanks

PS: oh, and I'm using this strictly for irc freenode.net
I don't go anywhere else but freenode anymoore. I used to along time ago, but not since I got married.

I doubt you'll find a $3/mo eggdrop account; cheapest are in the $5-7 range

if you don't need 24/7 bot, why not run a bot from your PC? or just use a script

Be aware that some of those $1, $2, or $3 accounts aren't "real" shell accounts; they often lack telnet/SSH access, some being FTP-only and others offering no access at all. Effectively, you're just renting a bot that isn't very flexible. The provider typically has to do any configuration/customisation for you and changes will be slow and limited; in some cases there may be a web-based control panel. These accounts are relatively recent phenomenon. To avoid them, look specifically for "telnet/SSH access" in the account's list of features.

Regarding a static IP, all shells have this, but it's not exclusive (i.e. other bots on the machine may be using the same IP/host). Most providers will have vhosts (different IPs/hosts you can pick from and set in your bot's config), some as an optional extra. The vhost may or may not be exclusive.

For $3.00 a month I know of a good place with mulitple servers that you can get a 2 BG process (thats 2 Eggs or 1 Egg and one BNC). If interested drop me a note or you can find me on Undernet or Efnet by this nick :)
