that server exists and is operational:

Code: Select all

xs4all.nl.quakenet.org has address 194.109.129.222
[demond@edi demond]$ telnet 194.109.129.222 6667

Whenever I have encountered DNS lookup failures it's always because a server has gone offline and with DALnet's track record it's quite frequent.

I've tried starting from scratch yesterday ... downloaded package, created a new eggdrop.conf ... same problem

DNS lookup failed if i use a server dns name
unforseen error 113 if I fill in a server ip address

I've tried multiple server addresses as well .. haven't tried other networks though .. I'll try that. If that doesn't work either, I have no idea what I can do next :(

Oh my god this is so stupid!!!

i've found the problem.

First of all, dns still doesn't work, but i use IP addresses now and that's fine for me

the problem was McAfee Enterprise 8.

It has port blocking in the on-access scanner ... I set an exception there so that eggdrop.exe can use ports 6666-6669

You can put multiple programs on that exception line, and divide them with a comma ... apparently McAfee doesn't think these 2 lines are the same:

mirc.exe, eggdrop.exe
mirc.exe,eggdrop.exe

AS IF there are executables that start with a space in their name

So the 'Unforseen error 113' will most likely have been the on-access-scan blocking the exe from using that port to the outside

Thanks all for looking for answers with me ... it's greatly appreciated. I'll look into the DNS resolution thingy when i'm feeling really adventurous one day ;)

I compiled my own Windrops and the reason was to do with the DNS module; it didn't work in the packages I downloaded. It was something to do with a component of Cygwin that was required and I can't remember exactly which one it was but seems the problem still persists.

In the Downloads section of my website is a version of Windrop (1.6.16) where the DNS module works exactly as it should; it also uses Gseen v1.1.1 Dev 3.

IMHO, the windrop folks should get rid of Cygwin and port eggdrop to use winsock natively; I can't imagine what's there to develop under Cygwin

If you are using minires 1.x for Cygwin you might want to downgrade to 0.97-1 to resolve the issue (worked for me).

PS: how am I supposed to run a Unix application without Cygwin under a win32 enviroment?
