Another thing i've noticed; when i follow the steps like discribed by strdragon, every space is replaced by a new line.
So my file looks like

hostname 1
user1
hostname5
user5
...
That doesn't work for me...

You're doing something wrong when splitting and/or joining the data. Post some code.
