See http://www.irchelp.org/
More specificly the page "IRCd server operation"

Note. IRCd's are a lot more expensive to run than eggdrop's, as they consume more memory, CPU time, network resources and are a genral burden on a system.

On top of this, you may not be able to link more than one server together, or are limited on what you can link. These are restrictions imposed by the shell providers.

My advice to you would be to try IRCd just for the sake of learning and expirience. Nothing more. There are already more than enough public IRC servers/networks that you are free to use.
Ignorant and lazy people will save 30 minutes by chosing simple config file. Smart ones will save 3000 minutes of *everyone's* time by opting for complete config file.
