Input about Limbo

Post by mopar »

Hi all..

I would like some input/reflections from you guys.
I run a a small botnet with 4bots divided over 2 different shells.
My Hub is on the most stable of the two shells with uptime over 125days at the moment. All together it works fairly well even though I'm no expert on eggies.
One thing though that has annoyed me somewhat is this, say for instance that my hub shell goes down for a day, then my 2 bots on the other shell is all i have, if one of those pings out as for a bad IRC server and then rejoins it has happened that the other bot wount op it. I gather this has to do with the fact that the Hub is missing? Now this aint an all to big problem since i have two IRC clients idling alongside, one from my work and one from my home, so I have never even been close to loose OP.

Now to the question.. Since my dsl at home is very stable I was thinking about putting an Limbo bot on my server at home. I've read some here on the site about Limbo some months ago but I would prefer to hear some opinions from you guys who has tried it. For instance is it a good idea to begin with, or should I just put a plain eggie on my homeserver?
If i do have a Limbo at home.. are all the other 4 bots concidered to be leafs then? Or will I still have a hub among them? I think I also read about "spare hub" could that be useful to me, I mean having one of the two bots on the less (usually up for 2months) stable shell as a spare hub?

Guide me please fellow eggheads
Ohh and I have my bots on EFnet..

Thanks in advance

There is no need for a limbo bot in this situation.

Limbo bots are only handy when you have lots of traffic and connections to handle, along with high bandwidth channels (spread accross the channels).

Example, our botnet used to consist of 97 bots. Each comprised of smaller nets, usualy between 3 - 6 bots in size, where that nets hub, would link into 1 bot.

This meant our master hub would handle around 16 connection just from the other hubs, in adition to it's own IRC traffic.

A limbo bot on my most stable shell, tool al errors away.

Your bot is proecssing such a small amount of botnet traffic compared to this, that it's a waste.

THe good news is, eggdrop comes with a built in feature, to get around your issue.

You have 4 bots (bot1, bot2, bot3, bot4) over 2 shells (shell1, shell2).

Shell1 goes down, and thus bots 3 & 4 are without a botnet.

You simply designate either bot3, or bot4 as a alt-hub.

This means, if connections fail to all +h hubs, then a connection is made to the alt-hub.

In bot4, type ".botattr bot3 +a".

Once bot3 is able to re-connect to the hub, bot4 will detect this. It will disconnect from the botnet, and re-link to the hub.

This alt-hub system, will allow getops, botnetops or other botnet based oping scripts to function, while your hub is away.

Thanks ppslim.

I'll try that, sounds like just the solution I was seeking.
